600 civilians flee to Gambella daily – UNHCR

Almost 40,000 South Sudanese have crossed into Ethiopia’s Gambella region over the past two months, the UN agency for refugees has said.

In a statement, UNHCR says it relocated the new arrivals to new camps at the border with South Sudan.

The UNHCR says an average of 600 individuals have been arriving on daily basis since September, most of whom are children.

The agency says it registered many unaccompanied and separated children, but did not mention how old they were.

“64% of the total registered new arrivals are children, including 8,004 unaccompanied and separated children,” partly reads a report.

It also says most of those who have fled were mainly from the greater Upper Nile region and the rest were from Unity state.

This brings the estimated total number of South Sudanese refugees and asylum-seekers in Ethiopia to 320,000 since 2013.

UNHCR has attributed the continuous move of South Sudanese fleeing to Ethiopia to insecurity and food shortage.
