Abyei

A child and a UN peacekeeper have been killed in the town during a shelling by the Sudan Armed Forces, an official has said.

The SPLM Secretary for Political Affairs in Abyei, David Kiir Zechariah, says four children and another peacekeeper were injured in the attack.

The children belong to the Dinka Ngok community while the peacekeepers are from the UN interim security force in the area.

Mr Kiir told Eye Radio that the Sudanese army and the Misseriya tribesmen living in the north of the region shelled the area on Thursday night.

“That resulted in the killing of a baby girl, aged 6 years, and the Ethiopian forces have also lost one soldier,” he stated.

The cause of the shelling is unclear.

Both the Sudan Armed Forces and the UNISFA are yet to comment.
