10 killed in fresh Jur River–Gogrial East border clashes despite peace efforts

At least 10 people have been killed and six others injured in the latest clashes between communities in Jur River and Gogrial East counties despite ongoing peace efforts led by senior government officials, according to authorities.

According to the Police Spokesperson in Western Bahr el Ghazal State, Lt. Col. Santino Udhuol, the incident occurred on Friday last week when suspected armed youth from neighbouring Gogrial East County in Warrap State allegedly attacked War-Ayat Boma in Marial Baai Payam of Jur River County in Western Bahr el Ghazal State.

“At approximately 5 a.m. on 24th July, 2026 in War-Ayat, Boma, of Marial Baai Payam in Jur River County. According to information received by the police, youth reportedly originated from Gogrial East County, Warrap State, attacked War-Ayat area, resulting in a violent confrontation and casualties on both sides,” he explained.

Lt. Col. Udhuol said the violent confrontation left three people dead and three others injured from Jur River County.

He said seven of the suspected attackers were also killed, while three firearms were recovered.

“On the side of Jur County, three people were reportedly killed and three others were reportedly injured. On the opposing side, seven people were reportedly killed, while three firearms were reportedly recovered. Five of the deceased had so far been identified,” he added.

The senior police officer said investigations into the latest incident are ongoing, while security forces continue to monitor the situation in the affected areas to prevent further violence.

The latest violence between the Marial Wau community of Jur River County and the Apuk Giir community of Gogrial East County in Warrap State is the latest in a series of attacks and counterattacks linked to a territorial dispute over the Manyang area.

The attack comes despite peace efforts led by a high-level committee headed by the Undersecretary in the Ministry of Defence, Gen. Gregory Vasili Dimitry, also known as Gregory Deng Kuach, to address the border dispute.

The national peace committee, comprising prominent leaders from the two communities, has been calling for a peaceful resolution to the border dispute.
