The Ministry of Local Government in Yei River state has presented a memo to the executive council proposing the introduction of a social service tax bill for the working class.
According to the ministry, the tax bill is aimed at boosting service delivery and development programs at the grassroots.
The tax targets the working class at the age of 18 years and above. It does not include the disabled and students.
The bill suggests that a house is expected to pay 150 South Sudanese every month.
“The working class is to pay this little money but it has a lot of impact on the local government and development in the counties and payams,” said Stephen Ladu Onesmo, state government spokesperson.
The bill is expected to be finalized next week and passed to the parliament for deliberation before it is passed into law.
