UN asked to remove of SPLM-IO soldiers from DRC

The DR Congolese government has given the UN a deadline of one week to fly out of the country members of the SPLM in Opposition loyal to Dr Riek Machar.

The 750 men were taken by the UN to Congo in August, following their leader Dr Riek Machar, who left Juba after clashes between his forces and SPLA soldiers.

Dr Riek was later evacuated to Khartoum, but the UN mission in Congo said it disarmed and hosted the soldiers in the eastern part of Congo.

The UN mission in Congo has confirmed to the BBC that the Congolese government considers the soldiers a security risk and wants them to be flown out.

This demand comes after a protest that the soldiers should be removed after a protest in Goma last Friday.

Congolese activists said they feared a repeat of the 1994 genocide in Rwanda when suspects of mass killings set up bases in eastern DR Congo, but later joined Congolese rebels.

Mid last month, MUNUSCO acknowledged that the presence of the disarmed men could become a threat to peace in Congo and the region.
