Farmers in Yei River are unable to harvest crops in farmlands of more than 600,000 hectares due to insecurity, according to state officials.

Most of the farmers affected are in the rural areas.

The state governor previously warned youth against leaving for the bush to cause in security.

Huda Michael Laila, Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, says that most of the farmers have been forced out of Yei over fears of looming hunger since they are unable to harvest the crops.

“It has become difficult for the people to harvest and we are supposed to enter into second season crop planting,” Ms Huda told Eye Radio.

Yei River state lies in the green belt, which has fertile soil and favorable weather conditions.

Meanwhile, health officials in Yei Civil Hospital say the government officials who were injured along the Yei-Morobo road ambush are responding well to treatment.

Two weeks ago, the officials felt into an ambush while returning from the Ugandan town of Koboko district. They were invited to Koboko to mark the international youth day.

The state officials include the education minister Mary Apayi, Morobo County commissioner Jacob Toti and Political advisor Jackson Abugo Gama.

The medical director at the hospital, John Wani said the officers are in better health conditions and may be discharged soon.
