The South Sudan Workers and Trade Union confederation is demanding that the Government increases the salaries of civil servants at the state and national levels.

The union also wants the salaries of both state and national government employees unified.

This appeal was made during a meeting with the Vice President, James Wani Igga, in Juba yesterday.

Pasquale Michael Apai, Union’s Secretary for External Relations, says there is a need to increase the salaries and allowances of workers in the country.

Mr. Apai told Eye Radio’s Dawn show this morning that there is need to increase the salaries of civil servants in order to improve their living standard.

Many national government employees receive less than 500 pounds each, per month.

“300 pounds cannot meet his or her daily needs; a civil servant cannot afford to pay money for transport from his or her home to the working place and back home,” said Mr Apai.

At state level, a junior worker receives about 200 pounds.

“Junior employee in grade 17 receive less money, about 180 pound,” he added.

“If you compare it to the national level, there is a big difference. So, we urge the government to unify the salaries of all the workers in country at both levels – state and national governments.”

Mr. Michael Apai appealed to the government to implement the proposal which said that unclassified employee must get 630 pounds per month as salary at the national and state levels.
