Wondu calls for exploitation of other natural resources

Auditor General Steven Wondu says South Sudan should diversify the economy by exploiting animal and forest resources.

Oil now accounts for about 80% of the annual budget, compared to about 98% three years ago.

However, Mr Wondu says not much is being done to benefit from the livestock, fish and forests in the country.

“If we package our livestock, if we harvest it one, we can feed a lot of people especially in those countries were they have problem of obesity and require organic foods,” he told Eye Radio in an exclusive interview.

“We should be able to produce milk, we are importing milk, and we are importing meat, the richest livestock in Africa exporting meat?”

Most foodstuffs come from the east African countries.

The auditor general says the fishing sector should also be commercialized for both local consumption and exports.
