Wau cuts meat price by 75%

The mayor of Wau municipality has issued a local order reducing the price of meat by 150 pounds per kilogram.

This comes amidst increase in the prices of commodities in the markets, especially foodstuffs.

A kilo of meat was being sold at 200 pounds, but the order states that all butchers should now sell a kilo of meat at 50 pounds.

Akol Akol Ajith says a kilo of boneless beef should be sold at 75 pounds.

He says anyone who fails to abide by the order will be fined, or even jailed.

“Those who do not want to respect this order….will pay a fine of 1000 pounds, and anyone who fails to pay this amount will spend 1 month in jail,” Mr Akol warned.

The butchers are yet to comment on the matter.

The economy deteriorated following the devaluation of South Sudanese pound against the US Dollars last year.

Traders say they access the hard currency expensively, and that is why they increase the prices of goods.
