Warrap and WBG governors agree to settle ‘Manyang’ dispute peacefully

Warrap and Western Bahr el Ghazal State governors have agreed to resolve amicably the conflict over the disputed Manyang area between Marial Bai and Jur River.

This is according to William Wol Mayom who is the Warrap State Minister of Information.

On August 23, fighting erupted between the communities of Gogerial East County and Jur-river County of ownership of the area.

Ever since, there have been intermittent revenge attacks including targeted ambushes on travelers along the road linking the two areas.

The dispute has claimed dozens of lives including humanitarian workers and military personnel.

Speaking to Eye Radio on Monday, Warrap Minister of Information William Wol Mayom says the two governors yesterday met and agreed to resolve the issue amicably.

Minister Mayom says a joint security meeting will be held in the coming days to finalize the matter.

“The meeting was held yesterday [Sunday] as per the arrival of the new governor H.E. Col. Koul Muor Muor to Wau airport of Western Bahr el Ghazal, to meet his counterpart the governor of Western Bahr el Ghazal, the meeting discussed the reason behind insecurity of Manyang area,” said Mayom.

“The meeting resolved that the issue of Manyang will be resolved amicably jointly by the two states,” he said.

“They promise that join security meeting will be held on a separate day because this was a brief meeting and also to inform the people of  Western Bahr el Ghazal that the government of Warrap state is committed to working collaboratively with the government of Western Bahr el Ghazal.”

Several phone calls to Western Bahr el Ghazal State went unanswered.
