The government Upper Nile state has withdrawn its decision to dissolve the state’s Workers Union.
Yesterday, the union received a notification from the state government that it should cease operations.
The state government had ordered the dissolution of the union after they supported a sit-in strike by teachers, and echoed a call for a prolonged strike if the government fails to pay the teachers’ salary.
However, the government today retracted its order, and asked the union to continue with its functions.
The chairperson of the state’s Workers Union, Adwok Othual Ajang, says that he welcomes the reversal of the decision.
“ I was demanding for the rights of the workers, and the government should have understood that it was not the issue of the union, but the issue of the teachers,” he said. “It was not a political issue but rather about the rights of the common worker. I appreciate the state government for withdrawing the decision to dissolve the union, and our relationship with government remains as it was. I thank them for that courageous decision”.
Mister Adwok said the union will continue to cooperate with the government on issues of workers.
The teachers and other civil servants in the state have not yet received their salaries for the month of June.
