The government of Unity State says it has started the process of the removal of landmines.

The Press secretary for the governor says the demining aims to help people to return to their respective regions in order to resettle.

Mayen Benson says that the demining will be in Benitu and Rubkona to ease movement of people and goods.

He told Eye Radio’s Dawn show this morning that the work is carried out in collaboration with the United Nations Mines Organization.

“We are now working in collaboration with them to ensure that some more hotspots are cleared of land mines. This is one number. Number two, the government of Unity wants to ensure that the security return to its previous state.” He said.

Mayen Benson said the landmines were planted during the current war.
