The Governor of Upper Nile State has urged newly appointed county commissioners to prioritize peace, unity and reconciliation, saying security is essential for meaningful development across the state.

The commissioners early this month include James Gatwech Jok for Nasir, Justin Nhial Batoanng for Ulang, Koang Diew for Longuchuk, John Paul Kuma for Maban, Zechariah Luany Amum for Manyo, Diing Deng Lueth for Renk, Manyol Akoch Aguer for Melut, James Chol Ador for Akoka, Onak Okech Lual for Fashoda, and Deng Angow for Baliet County.

Addressing the newly appointed commissioners on Friday morning, the governor called on them to promote peaceful coexistence in their respective counties and resolve disputes through dialogue rather than violence.

“Prioritize peace, unity and reconciliation among our people in your respective counties. Without peace and security in our state, there can be no meaningful development,” the governor said.

The governor also urged the commissioners to remain accessible to the communities they serve, listen to residents and understand the challenges affecting them.

He stressed that the commissioners’ responsibility is to serve the people rather than themselves, calling for humility, integrity and transparency in the exercise of their duties.

“We are here to serve the people of Upper Nile State, not ourselves. Let’s serve with humility, integrity and transparency so that basic services are delivered to our people,” he said.

The governor further challenged the commissioners to measure their performance by tangible improvements in people’s lives and communities rather than speeches or unfulfilled promises.

“Let’s not be judged by the speeches and unfilled promises. Instead, [let us be judged] by the positive results they can see in their lives and communities.”

He concluded by wishing the newly appointed commissioners success in their assignments and urged them to carry out their responsibilities as servants of the people with wisdom, courage and strength.

The governor’s message comes as the Upper Nile State administration identifies peace and security, agriculture and economic development, infrastructure, community reconciliation, and basic services such as healthcare and education among its key priorities.
