Two United Nations agencies have constructed or renovated more than 300 physical infrastructures including 33 schools and 30 health facilities across South Sudan with funding from the World Bank.

UN Project Service (UNOPS) in partnership with the International Organization for Immigration (IOM) handed over the facilities which also include boreholes, market sheds, community centers and feeder roads.

ECRP Senior Project Manager Mr. John Nyirenda said the project has also built the capacity of 369 Bomas and 20 county coordination committees.

The three-year initiative dubbed Enhancing Community Resilience and Local Governance Project started on September 3, 2020, and will conclude on July 31, 2024.

According to the peacekeeping body, the ongoing development initiative benefits 20 counties in South Sudan’s 10 states and three administrative areas.

“The World Bank funds the project and aims at addressing the immediate needs for basic services and strengthening local institutions’ capacity across the country,” said a joint statement from the agencies.

The ECRP is an initiative that supports the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by responding to the impact of multiple and interlocking crises facing the communities across South Sudan.

UNOPS and IOM say the completion and handing over of these projects “have left impactful traces of transformation and development in many communities nationwide.”
