The Medical Director of Juba Teaching Hospital, Dr. Maker Isaac, has called for increased support to the country’s main referral hospital, saying many of its patients cannot afford basic necessities.

Speaking during the handover of trash bins, cleaning materials and other supplies donated by Nile Petroleum Corporation (Nile Pet) and Jetman Nile Services on World Environment Day, Dr. Isaac said the hospital serves some of the most disadvantaged people in South Sudan.

“This is a hospital with poor people. The people who come to Juba Teaching Hospital are the poor of the poor,” he said in a video clip broadcast on the state-run TV, SSBC on Saturday.

Dr. Isaac said many patients admitted to the hospital lack food and medicine, placing additional pressure on the health facility.

“If you want to help people of South Sudan, help the hospital because our patients have no food, they have no medicine, and we are trying to stay so that we help them,” he said.

He welcomed the donation and expressed hope that it would lead to further cooperation between the hospital and the private sector.

The donation included trash bins, liquid soap, gloves and other cleaning materials. According to the donors, the contribution was made as part of activities marking World Environment Day and aimed at supporting cleanliness and waste management at the hospital.

Juba Teaching Hospital is the country’s largest public referral hospital and receives patients from across South Sudan.
