Traditional elders call for dialogue

The Chairperson of the South Sudan Women Peace Initiative says some of the country’s traditional elders have called for a national dialogue to ensure there is lasting peace.

The women group last month met with the elders of the Equatoria, Jieng and Nuer.

Lilian Albino says prior to the forum, they also met with a number of government officials, religious leaders, and youth groups.

She said most of them expressed the same interest of holding a national dialogue to bring peace in South Sudan.

“Most of the people we met with understand the need for a dialogue. They say we are South Sudanese; we want to sit and talk and maybe discuss everything; that ‘how can we forge a way forward in order for us to have a very strong future?’” Ms Albino said.

She added that the elders they have met so far condemned all atrocities committed in the recent conflict, especially against women and children.
