Teachers decline to take half payments-Jonglei

The Minister of Education in Jonglei State says teachers have rejected an offer to pay half of their allowances and decided to go on a strike.

Tut Kony Nyang stated that the state council of ministers had agreed to pay fifty percent of the allowances of all civil servants in the state after passing a budget for it.

He says despite several meetings with teachers, they have continued on with their strike.

Mr. Tut told Eye Radio’s Dawn program that the teachers are demanding that all their allowances are paid at once.

“We have talked to them but they want 100%. But this is almost impossible; we can only raise fifty percent with this situation we are in.” He said.

Last month teachers in Jonglei State went on a strike. They were demanding that the state authorities pay their chalk and house allowances.
