The national parliament has warned state legislative assemblies against amending constitutions.
The chairman of the Information Committee says he has been informed that some states have started processes to amend their constitutions to extend the term of office for their governors.
Thomas Wani Kundu told Eye Radio that the amendments will be illegal.
“The fact that article one hundred sixty five is silent about the period of the office of the governors. It doesn’t mean that the state parliament is to amend the constitution. No.” He said.
Adding that; “the only person who has the full mandate and has a legitimacy to initiate amendment of the national constitution is the President of the Republic as is stipulated in the article 101.”
Last week the national legislature amended the national transitional constitution to extend the term of the president for three years.
It also extended its mandate and that of the state assemblies until 2018.
