South Sudan Revenue Authority (SSRA) has hired a Uganda-based company Infasco to install an electronic cargo tracking system in all trucks entering the country.

The cargo tracking system will be installed on all commercial cargo at entry points to help fight the smuggling of goods, cargo diversion and fraud in documents.

Africano Mande, the Commissioner-General of South Sudan National Revenue Authority said he discussed the issue of non-oil revenue collection with his Ugandan counterpart.

Mr. Mande said he and the Commissioner-General of Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) signed the agreement in Kampala on Thursday.

“According to the communication of President Kiir, we will contract the services of Infasco company to help us and we are ready to work with this company. Well, enough, a legal framework was signed before.”

Mr Mande further said South Sudan has seen improvement in revenue collection at the customs division due to the introduction of the electronic system.

On January 18, South Sudan Bureau of Standards confiscated 17 commercial trucks carrying smuggled goods destined for Juba from Nimule town and Nesitu checkpoint.

The development came after South Sudan and Uganda Bureau of Standards agreed on several measures to fight substandard goods being shipped between the two countries.

The Bureau’s chairperson, Dr Kuorwel Kuai Kuorwel says the institution’s technical team discovered the illegal transiting of goods without passing through a routine examination.
