A large number of South Sudanese secondary and university students in Uganda are unable to attend classes because their parents back home cannot afford to send money over, to pay for their studies as a result of the crisis.
A member of South Sudan Student League in Uganda, Garang Ajang Kwareng, told Eye Radio that some of the students lost contact with their parents when fighting erupted in Juba two months ago.
“The situation in Uganda actually is not very okay with the students who are studying in Uganda because most of them were relying on the government in Juba. Those who are in Uganda are getting their support from South Sudan. You know life of refugees actually, they have no shelter and some of them are now struggling to get shelter”, Kwareng said.
Mr. Ajang said there are over 10,000 South Sudanese students studying in higher institutions of learning in Uganda.
