South Sudan to play The Gambia behind closed doors

The U-20 national football team will play the quarterfinal match against The Gambia behind closed doors in Egypt, the national football-governing body has been told.

The Bright Stars, who finished third in group stages, take on Group C leaders The Gambia in their first-ever TotalEnergies U-20 Africa Cup of Nations quarter-final in Alexandria on Friday.

The South Sudan Football Association on Friday posted on social media, that they were informed that the match will be played behind a closed military stadium.

“We regret to inform our beloved fans and supporters in Egypt that according to information we have received, the match against The Gambia tomorrow will be played behind closed doors. No fans are permitted,” the SSFA statement reads.

“The game will be played behind a closed military stadium. The boys are committed to raising the flag higher and would want to thank you all for your ongoing support.”

Uganda have bowed out of the competition after losing to Nigeria on Thursday at the Suez Canal Stadium in Ismailia.

Nigeria will face the winner between The Gambia and South Sudan in the semi-finals on Monday, March 6 at the Cairo International Stadium at 19h00 local time (17h00 GMT).
