South Sudan staged a dominant display to beat China 89-69 and earn their first FIBA World Cup victory in Manila, the Philippines.

The Bright Stars reeled from the painful loss to Puerto Rico to earn the win and keep their World Cup ambition alive in the group dominated by elite nations.

This time, they were in control of the game and led the score throughout the four quarters, while avoiding a repeat of last week’s disappointment by making sure the Chinese could not turn the tides in the last-minute.

Ranked 62nd by FIBA, the Bright Stars have a rough road ahead, as they must beat Serbia to stand any chance of proceeding to the next round of the tournament.

Meanwhile, China ranked 27th, are now set to depart the World Cup after losing twice to Serbia and South Sudan, as their pending match against Puerto Rico will not make any difference.

The other Group B members Serbia, ranked 8th, and Puerto Rico, ranked 20th have also registered wins but are set to play each other later on Monday.

After the final whistle, celebrations erupted at the Nimra Talata Basketball Court in Juba – where thousands of South Sudanese are watching the games live.
