South Sudan has made significant diplomatic and foreign policy achievements at both regional and international levels since gaining independence in 2011, according to the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Ambassador James Pitia Morgan.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Eye Radio ahead of the country’s 15th Independence Anniversary, Ambassador Morgan said one of South Sudan’s greatest milestones was securing membership in key regional and international organizations, enabling the country to participate in global affairs.

“One of our biggest achievements since independence is that South Sudan became a full member of the United Nations, the African Union, IGAD and other international organizations. Through these memberships, our people now have a voice in regional and global decision-making processes,” he said.

The minister said South Sudan has evolved from being a passive observer to an active player in international geopolitics, with its participation in major global institutions helping shape international decisions.

“Today, South Sudan is no longer just watching from the sidelines. At the United Nations General Assembly, for example, our vote counts and contributes to resolutions and decisions that affect the international community,” Ambassador Morgan added.

He also revealed that South Sudan has expanded its diplomatic footprint by establishing resident embassies in nearly 30 countries across Africa, Europe, Asia, North America and Australia.

According to the minister, the country maintains diplomatic missions in Egypt, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Nigeria, Somalia, South Africa, Sudan, Uganda and Zimbabwe, among other African nations.

In Europe, South Sudan has embassies in France, Germany, the Holy See (Vatican), the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and the United Kingdom, while in Asia it is represented in China, India, Japan and Türkiye. The country also maintains diplomatic missions in Canada and the United States.

Ambassador Morgan described the expansion of South Sudan’s diplomatic missions as a major achievement in strengthening bilateral relations and promoting the country’s interests abroad.

“The establishment of our diplomatic missions across different continents has strengthened our bilateral relations and enhanced our ability to protect and advance South Sudan’s national interests on the global stage,” he said.

On regional cooperation, the minister said South Sudan has deepened relations with neighboring countries through trade and economic partnerships, creating opportunities for its citizens.

He added that stronger regional ties have enabled many South Sudanese students to access scholarships offered by African countries while making it easier for citizens to travel, study and conduct business across the region.

“Our improved relations with neighboring countries have opened more opportunities for our people through education, trade and easier movement across the region,” Ambassador Morgan said.
