South Sudan free from cholera

South Sudan is now free from Cholera, the World Health Organization and the Ministry of Health have declared.

The cholera outbreak was declared in the country in June.

Health Minister Dr Riek Gai says more than 1,800 people were affected and 47 died of the disease since the declaration of the outbreak.

Most of the cholera incidents were recorded in Juba, Bor, Yei and Torit.

“This is a big news, but it is also a start of another journey. We want to see that no outbreak of cholera again in this country,” Dr Gai said.

Officials say the death rate was 2.59.
