South Sudan has reaffirmed its support for stronger relations between Israel and African countries, including backing Israel’s observer status at the African Union.

The position was expressed during talks between the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, James Pitia Morgan, and Israel’s Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar.

The two ministers discussed cooperation in economic sectors, regional security, and opportunities for training South Sudanese diplomats and offering scholarships to students.

Dr. Morgan said South Sudan remains committed to strengthening bilateral cooperation in mining, agriculture, trade, technology, and diplomacy following talks held in Jerusalem.

“South Sudan will continue to stand steadfast in its commitment to supporting Israel’s engagement with the African continent,” Minister Morgan stated.

“We reiterate our support for Israel’s observer status within the African Union, as reaffirmed by His Excellency the President on 17 February 2024, and we will continue to engage constructively with fellow African states to advance this objective.

“We firmly believe that stronger Africa-Israel relations will create new opportunities for partnership in innovation and sustainable development across the continent.”

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar welcomed the growing ties and thanked South Sudan for its support in international forums.

He said Israel is committed to expanding cooperation and underscored the importance of protecting freedom of religion and safeguarding holy sites.

“We continue to expand cooperation with South Sudan in many fields. We appreciate your voice supporting Israel in international forums, Minister,” Minister Gideon said.

“I know you have visited some of the holy sites in Jerusalem this morning. You have walked in the steps and touched the stone of the cradle of the Jewish and Christian religions. As the Jewish state and as the only democracy in our region, we see great importance in safeguarding freedom of religion and protecting holy sites.”

The two sides also discussed expanding diplomatic engagement through training programmes for South Sudanese diplomats and scholarship opportunities for students.

During the visit, the South Sudanese delegation toured historical and religious sites in Jerusalem, including the Western Wall. Dr. Morgan said the visit aimed to deepen cooperation and advance areas of mutual interest.
