Security suspends elections of lawyers’ leadership

Elections for the leadership of the South Sudan lawyers association have been suspended.

Lawyers prepared to vote this morning in Juba and Wau for the chairman of the association, deputy and associates.

But the chairman of the steering committee, Peter Mathias, said security officials stopped the voting. They said the association did not seek permission from security agencies.

He told Eye Radio that some lawyers had cast their votes when the polling was stopped.

“More than 60 to 70 lawyers casted their votes in Juba town and their votes are in the ballot boxes. So I will not say that this suspension is totally suspension because it is the arrangement process and the procedures of completing the administration hierarchy,” hee said.

Mathias said the association met and suspended the voting.

The elections of the association were first postponed two months ago. National security officials did not comment on the matter.
