Schools remain closed in violence-affected Maridi, Mundri

Schools remain closed in Mundri and Maridi towns in Western Equatoria State due to the conflict in the two counties.

In May, the killing of an executive director resulted in clashes in the town, in which 18 people were killed.

In June, locals clashed with cattle keepers in Maridi, leading further loss of lives.

The schools were closed since then and are yet to reopen.

“But schools which are in the faraway payams have reopened. Children are reporting and teaching is going on,” said Pia Phillip, state minister of education.

The violence has also impacted on the residents, with some fleeing to the neighboring areas.
