Juba- South Sudan – The second-best female performer in the 2025 South Sudan Secondary School Certificate Examinations, Awur Madol Anyuat, says her lifelong dream is to become a gynaecologist, inspired by a renowned medical doctor from Jonglei State.

Awur, who scored 87.6 percent and ranked second among female candidates nationwide behind Nyaduok Chuol, shared her ambitions during an exclusive interview with Eye Radio on Wednesday afternoon.

The young scholar said her passion for medicine began at an early age after witnessing the impact of a respected gynaecologist in Bor.

“Ever since I was young, I’ve always dreamt of doing medicine. Specifically, I want to be a gynaecologist, ” Awur said.

She explained that her inspiration came from Dr. Gai Kuch Kon, a renowned specialist she admired while growing up in Bor.

“When I was in Bor, there was a man called Gai Kuch Kon. He was a great gynaecologist, and I got inspired by him,” she said.

According to Awur, the doctor earned a reputation for helping women who had struggled for years to conceive.

“Even a woman who had spent like five years without giving birth, the moment she goes to him, she is going to give birth because of the mindset they have,” she said.

Awur also spoke about the confidence and hope patients often gain from trusted medical professionals.

“You know, when you go to the hospital and the doctor just touches you or talks to you, you feel better, even when the doctor did not do anything. That is the power they have,” she added.

She said her goal is to follow in the footsteps of Dr. Gai and dedicate her life to improving women’s health services in South Sudan.

“I want to be like him, whereby I can heal people when they just see me,” Awur said.

Awur’s achievement places her among the country’s top-performing students in the recently announced examination results, which were released by the Ministry of General Education and Instruction on Monday.

The examinations were sat by more than 45,000 candidates across South Sudan, with several students posting impressive performances despite challenges facing the education sector.

For Awur, however, the results mark only the beginning of a journey she hopes will eventually lead her to a career in medicine and service to women and families across the country.
