Romania on Saturday recalled its ambassador to Kenya after he reportedly made a racist slur comparing Africans to monkeys.

Ambassador Dragos Tigau ignited diplomatic protests in Nairobi when he saw a monkey outside through a window and likened to the African race.

On Saturday June 10, the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it has decided to recall its ambassador to Nairobi over the diplomatic embarrassment.

“As soon as the Romanian MFA’s leadership learned about the incident on the evening of June 8th 2023, the MFA decided that the ambassador returns urgently to Romania..,” says the Romanian MFA.

“Taking into account the situation generated by the conduct of the Romanian Ambassador to the Republic of Kenya, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has already started the process of recalling the Romanian Ambassador,”

According to the AFP news agency, ambassador Tigau said during a meeting at a UN building in Kenya that “the African group has joined us” when he saw a monkey outside a window.

The remarks were disclosed by Kenya’s foreign Ministry official on Thursday June 8.

According to Bucharest, the embattled diplomat apologized to Kenyans following the incident.

“The Romanian Foreign Ministry deeply regrets this situation, conveys its apologies to all those affected and strongly rejects and condemn all behaviors and attitudes incompatible with mutual respect.”
