The Ministry of Roads and Bridges in collaboration with the South Sudan Roads Authority, introduced a mandatory $40 service fee for weighing each truck using the Juba-Nimule Road.

This comes after the Manager of Nimule Weighbridge refuted allegations that truck drivers delivering commercial goods are being asked to pay 100 US dollars for weigh measurement.

According to Eng. Charles Ohisa, the foreign truckers were only protesting the regulation because they had been taking advantage of the lack of it.

Meanwhile, the roads ministry said the new 40-dollar fee announced on Monday, aims to cover road maintenance costs, including the upkeep of the newly operational weighbridge at Nimule.

The order signed by Minister Simon Mijok Mijak said the weighbridge is fully authorized to regulate the loading of heavy trucks weighing 3.5 tons and above.

This regulation addresses significant road damage caused by overloaded vehicles and ensures compliance with international standards.

Mijak directed all road users, transport operators, and enforcement agencies to comply with weighbridge regulations.

The statement incited that while the weighbridge is operational, the official opening ceremony will be scheduled at a later date, subject to the availability of key stakeholders.

Regular progress reports on the weighbridge’s operation will be submitted to the Ministry of Roads and Bridges to ensure efficiency and identify areas for improvement.

The weighbridge is considered vital for mitigating ongoing road damage caused by overloaded vehicles on the Juba-Nimule Highway.
