The Manager of Renk power station in Upper Nile State disclosed that the area has successfully restored power supply from Sudan after a two-week blackout caused by the recent conflict in eastern Sudan which severely damaged power lines.

William Swaka Wani said the hydroelectricity supply from dams in Sudan resumed on Tuesday after it was cut off since the 6th January 2025 due to intense fighting between Sudan junta and paramilitary RSF.

Mr. Swaka noted that the region had been relying on power from a dam in Roseiris reservoir, but the war has disrupted the transmission lines.

However, he said maintenance on the damaged lines is challenging, prompting the border town to shift to electricity supply from Sinja and Sennar dams the 220-kilovolt Atbara line.

Mr. Swaka said when electricity reaches Renk, it reduces to 110 kV for storage and distribution, which often proves insufficient to meet the local demands.

“The outbreak of violence in Sudan affected the electricity supply to the region. Electricity had been cut off since the 6th, but returned the day before yesterday,” he said.

“We used to get electricity from the Roseiris dam, but the war caused the electricity lines to be cut off, and it is currently difficult to maintain them.”

“Now we use electricity coming from Sinja and Sennar from Atbara via the 220 line. When it reaches us, it becomes 110 so that it can be stored and distributed to the loads, and it is often not sufficient.”
