Prisons face shortage of funds

Author : | Published: Friday, January 16, 2015

Authorities from the National Prison Service say there is a shortage of funds for the rehabilitation of more than 6,000 prisoners across the country.

The Director General of Prisons, Gen. Abel Makoi Wol says limited vocational trainings are being conducted.

“When a prisoner is received, he is supposed to be given skills. You have to take them to the farm, workshops, handcrafts and all other activities that would make a prisoner productive when he or she goes back home. So these programs have not been so much progressive because of the lack of resources.”

Gen. Makoi said prisons are also overcrowded; others have been destroyed in the states affected by the conflict.
