UN police boss calls for thorough training of police before deployment

The Police Commander of UNMISS has told the UN Security Council that police personnel should be well trained before deployment to ensure that the host nation’s needs are met.

Fred Yiga said true policing has never been offered to the South Sudanese people in over 50 years – and the UN has the responsibility to ensure that good policing is provided.

“The UN is “holding the mantle” to ensure that the first time “good policing, true policing” is provided, said Mr Yiga.

The Security Council urged police-contributing countries to continue contributing professional police personnel with the necessary skills, equipment and experience to implement the mission’s mandates.

The Council yesterday adopted the first resolution on its policing operations, emphasizing contribution of personnel to peacekeeping, civilian protection and the rule of law.

The resolution stresses the importance of close cooperation and coordination between the UN Police Components and other elements of peacekeeping operations and special political missions.
