Two former Security guards of the UN Mission in South Sudan have been arrested by UN police for protesting.

Since Monday, more than 100 guards have been demanding unpaid pension and blocking the gates of UN house in Yei road and Thongpiny.

They were arrested this morning in front of the UN House at Yei road.

The Representative of the former guards, Zonokumbo Edward, called on the UN to respond to their demands urgently.

“They have beaten two of our people…….and ran with the two guys to hospital. We don’t know which hospital they took them to,” he added.

The Commissioner UN police, Fred Yiga, confirmed the arrest of the two demonstrators.

The Spokesperson of UNMISS, Ariane Quentier says they are waiting for response from its headquarters in New York.

“UN is currently doing its level best to work with the pension fund administration in the United Nations Headquarters in New York to expedite the payment of pensions,” Ms Quentier said.

“We are also urging the demonstrators to exercise restraint in the meantime while this issue is being resolved.”

There are at least 200 former UNMISS Guards all over the country. Each of them demands between $30,000 to $50,000.
