An activist is calling for endorsement of the permanent constitution before the presidential elections due in 2015.
Paleki Mathew, who is also the director of South Sudan Women Empowerment Network, told Eye Radio it is important for the country to first have a permanent constitution.
The TV presenter turned activist argued that the current Transitional Constitution “vests too much power in the hand of the President.”
“The second thing is the issue of the presidential term limit which is not clearly defined in the constitution, as we speak.”
Miss Paleki also said the expected constitution of South Sudan must be based on democracy and a proper judicial system.
“We don’t want to see another common scenario in Africa where presidents are in for ten or fifteen years, no….We ought to legislate a constitution that will be based on international principles of justice and democracy,” she argued.
Recently, the chairperson of the Constitution Review Commission, Akolda Ma’an Tier, announced that with the current financial situation, the awaited permanent constitution for South Sudan cannot be ready before elections.
Mister Akolda also said the constitution making process is not tied to the General elections.
