Parliament condemns conscription of minors

Members of South Sudan Parliamentary Lobby Group for Children has condemned recruitment of children into the army, calling it ‘illogical’.

Recent media reports indicated that children as young as 15 years have been conscripted, an allegation the SPLA denied.

The United Nations Mission estimates that there are 11,000 child soldiers in the country.

Deputy Chairperson of the lobby group says the recruitment of child is against child rights and against the UN convention on the rights of the child.

Gatwech Lam Puoch says children have been recruited into armed groups for many reasons.

“It’s illogical; whether by the government or by the rebels,” Mr Lam told Eye Radio’s Dawn show this morning.

Armies use several mays to get the minors to join the army.

“Some are told that if they go voluntary, there they would get a lot of things,” he added.

Mr. Lam urged the warring parties, the government and the SPLA in Opposition to respect the rights if children.
