Over 200 higher education policymakers from Kenya, DRC, Rwanda, Tanzania, Somalia, Uganda, and Burundi will meet in Juba next week for the Inter-University Council for East Africa’s annual meeting and conference.
In a press release, the conference that will start on Monday next week is going to be attended by some partners coming from Europe, Asia, and South Africa.
According to IUCEA Public Relations and Corporate Communications Officer, Peter Gai Manyuon, the Annual General Meeting is scheduled for 17th -18th July 2024 in Juba, South Sudan.
Gai says the event brings together higher education managers, policymakers, and practitioners from the East African Community (EAC) and beyond.
This year’s statutory event focuses on higher education leadership and governance, which are crucial to achieving the desired East African Community Common Higher Education Area.
The dissuasions will be under the theme “Innovative Leadership and Governance Approaches in Higher Education: Towards EAC Common Higher Education Area”.
The Chairperson of the IUCEA Organizing Committee for the conference, Prof. Micheal Mawa stated that the Conference aims to achieve regional educational goals.
He added that this should be through a unified higher education system, promoting mobility and mutual recognition of qualifications.
“The conference offers an opportunity to examine innovative leadership frameworks and strategies addressing the challenges facing higher education institutions in the context of EAC regional integration,” said Prof. Mawa.
“It also seeks to highlight transformative governance practices that support institutional effectiveness, foster stakeholder engagement, and facilitate decision-making processes aligned with higher education harmonization and regional integration goals,” he added.
The conference targets University Presidents, Provosts, Rectors, Directors, Director Generals, Vice-Chancellors, EAC government officials, education policymakers, industry representatives, researchers and scholars, higher education experts, innovators, and student representatives.
The Declaration of EAC as a Common Higher Education Area by the 18th Ordinary Summit of Heads of State of the East African Community Partner States held on May 20, 2017, in Dar Es-Salaam, Tanzania was a significant milestone in transforming the higher education landscape in the region.
Furthermore, the event aims to showcase innovative pedagogical approaches and teaching methodologies to enhance student learning outcomes and critical thinking skills, preparing graduates for success in a rapidly evolving technology.
Reflecting on strategies for mobilizing and managing resources effectively is also a key focus, including sustainable funding models, public-private partnerships, and leveraging technological advancements for quality higher education.
Overall, the conference aims to provide a platform for knowledge exchange, networking, and collaboration among higher education stakeholders to facilitate mutual learning and partnerships for advancing the common higher education area in the EAC.
