The National Revenue Authority says Sudan has agreed to consider its proposal for a special arrangement to collect customs duties and taxes on South Sudan-bound cargo from Port Sudan.
Dr. Patrick Mugoya, the Commissioner-General of NRA said that the deal could increase the country’s non-oil revenue.
The agreement has been reached after the two nations signed a Memorandum of Understanding in Juba in November last year.
The deal was signed by the Director-Generals of the Customs Departments of the two countries.
It was meant to harmonize taxation policies and the movement of goods between the two countries in anticipation of the resumption of trade between the two countries.
It also provides for knowledge on the exchange between the two countries for the management and efficient handling of collected revenues.
According to the deal, South Sudanese customs officials will also be taken to Khartoum and Port Sudan for training.
Both governments reiterated their commitment to implementing all the provisions of the agreement to boost bilateral trade between the sisterly countries.
