Logistical constraints and insecurity remain major concerns to humanitarian operations

Logistical constraints and insecurity remain major concerns to humanitarian operations in the conflict affected areas in South Sudan, the World Food Program has said.

Today South Sudan joins the rest of the world in celebrating World Food Day.

The theme of today’s celebration is: “Family farming, feeding the world, caring for the earth”.

The UN agency says despite the on-going conflict, there has been some improvement in food security in the areas that have been affected by the conflict.

George Fominyen, WFP’s Public Relations Officer in South Sudan, says people in these areas were able to grow some food.

People were able to grow some food and in some parts of the conflict affected states, there were some kind of farming and they were able to grow some crops,” Fominyen said.

Mr. Fominyen urged the warring parties to stop the fighting and bring peace in order to help provide food for those affected by the conflict.

“So we are calling on all the parties to the conflict to put the needs and aspirations of South Sudanese people first.”

Mr. George Fominyen says W-F-P has provided food for 2.5 million people in the areas affected by the conflict, since the conflict erupted in mid-December last year.

Nearly 4 million people remain in urgent need in South Sudan following the conflict that broke out last year, according to aid group Oxfam.

Over one million people have fled their homes and are displaced within the country and over 450,000 have fled to neighboring countries.
