A Liberia man who fled the Sudan conflict to South Sudan and sought refuge in Yambio is appealing to the government and IOM to facilitate his repatriation to his home country.

Francher Jefferson Logar said he trekked to South Sudan through Abyei, following the outbreak of conflict in Sudan in April 2023, and proceeded to Wau and then to Yambio.

Speaking to Eye Radio in Yambio town, the displaced man said he wants to return to his home country after over 30 years.

“The help I want from IOM is how to get a way to repatriate me from Juba to Liberia because right now there is no more war in Liberia like previously,” Francher said.

The Liberian said he has lived almost all his life as a refugee, adding that it is time to go home.

“Because of the crisis I have been, I don’t know how many years I have been running, I am tired, so I made up my mind to get back home because home is home, no place like home.”

Francher hails from Grand Bassa County in the west-central portion of Liberia. According to him, he fled Liberia in 1992 following a brutal conflict which occurred between 1989-1997.

The civil war was between guerrilla fighter Charles Taylor, who commanded an uprising against President Samuel Doe, who himself had taken power in a coup in 1980.

Some 250,000 people were killed in the fighting overall, thousands more were mutilated and raped.

In June, Western Equatoria Deputy Chief of Immigration and Aliens’ Control said in a letter addressed to the Acting Director of Civil Registry stated that Francher Jefferson should be accorded a refugee status under the UNHCR protection.

The acting director of Civil registry in the state however forwarded the matter to the commission of refugee affairs for consideration.

Francher said he was told by the Commission of Refugee Affairs to contact IOM in Juba since he wants to return to his home country.

On Sunday, a group of faithful at the Continuing Evangelical Episcopal Communion raised around 17,000 South Sudan pounds to help him reach Juba.
