Leer: ICRC suspends operations due to security concerns

The International Committee of the Red Cross has withdrawn all its staff from a humanitarian compound in Leer County, Unity State, after it was looted and its aid workers threatened.

In a statement, the ICRC says dozens armed men entered the compound over the weekend and stole equipment, medical supplies, and money.

It said two ICRC vehicles were also taken and ten workers threatened. According to the statement, a distribution of food planned for October has been disrupted.

Spokesperson Yamila Castro has called on the parties involved in the conflict to respect humanitarian organizations and their staff.

“The ICRC is a neutral organization; we are working across South Sudan in all ten states on both sides of conflict and what we remind all parties involved in the conflict of, is that our staff and facilities should be respected,” Ms Castro said.

This is the second time the organization has evacuated its staff from Leer this year.

In May 2015, the ICRC left its base in Leer over worsening insecurity and just returned to the area last month.

The organization now says it will not return to the area until security improves.

“The ICRC will not resume operations in Leer County until security conditions improve and assurances are given from all relevant parties,” the humanitarian group said in a statement.

It’s unclear what will happen to those who need the services of the humanitarian group.
