Lakes State gov’t doing little to avert violence – Archbishop

The Archbishop of the Episcopal Church of Sudan and South Sudan has criticized the government for the continued violence in Lakes State.

Many people have been killed in separate communal attacks and revenge across the counties over the last few years.

The latest incident took place in the state capital, Rumbek, yesterday, whereby six people were killed in clashes between youth from two neighboring communities.

In March this year, Archbishop Daniel Deng Bul visited counties in the state to campaign for peace.

He told Eye Radio that fighting is continuing due lack of coordination by the state authorities.

“When the church went there, it managed to bring the situation down calmly,” he said.

“The government did not pick it up from there to help that peace that was brought in by the church. They did not pick it up.”

However, the state officials have denied any wrong doing. The Security Advisor, Marial Amum, told Eye Radio that they have done their best in resolving the conflicts.

They now expect intervention from the national government.

“The state government is not silent. The state government has been trying and trying and trying,” he protested.

“But remember, anybody trying, you keep trying until one day if you become tired, then things will go out of hands.”

However, Archbishop Deng says the authorities did not follow up the promises of peace made by the communities during meetings held by the church.

He says the state government should have quickly implemented community policing to prevent further attacks.
