Lakes State Police are intensifying search for “the most-wanted criminal” accused of killing two civilians before resisting arrest and killing a police officer during a confrontation at Yar Malual village in Rumbek Center.

The suspect – whose identity has been withheld – first killed two people at Cueicok along the road in Rumbek North County, police spokesperson Maj. Elijah Mabor Makuac said.

The security official said the suspect later clashed with security forces at 12am in Yar Malual village, resulting in the death of one police officer and injuries to two security personnel.

He said the wounded officers were evacuated to Rumbek State Hospital for treatment.

Maj. Makuac stated that security forces, accompanied by the Rumbek Center County commissioner, are actively pursuing the suspect.

“On January 15, the most wanted criminal who killed two people at Cueicok clashed with the security forces at the Yar Malual village, leading to killing of one police personnel and wounding of other two security personnel,” Makuac said.

“This criminal was intercepted and then the security forces went to the site with the commissioner of Rumbek Center County in an attempt to arrest him. But unfortunately, he resisted.”

“He managed to kill people and fled at large. Up to now, the security forces and the commissioner are still following him to identify his whereabouts. He must be arrested.”

On her part, Angelina Adhel Malual, a representative of the state’s network of civil society organizations, condemned the attacks on security personnel, who he said play a crucial role of police and army in protecting communities.

She urges the government to implement strict measures to ensure the safety of security personnel and to promote respect for the men in uniform.
