Police in Lakes State have launched a manhunt for a gunman who killed a 19-year-old boda-boda rider at Meendem village of Rumbek Center on the weekend.

The state police spokesperson, Maj. Elijah Mabor Makuac said the young man was transporting a passenger on his bike from Rumbek North to Rumbek Center – when he was shot dead at 6:30pm on 9th January 2025.

Makuac revealed that the suspect fled after committing the crime, but failed to explain whether the motive was robbery or targeted killing.

“We are still monitoring to identify the perpetrator and to be arrested,” he said.

“Our security apparatus will identify the perpetrator that ambushed and killed a boda-boda rider along Rumbek Center-Rumbek North road. When the suspect is identified, automatically the arrest will take place.”

Meanwhile, the police official said the security situation across the state is calm except few isolated cases, adding that security forces have been deployed to maintain peace.

“My call to Lakes State communities is that to cooperate with the security forces to provide information about the culprits, and people should not take law into their own hands. When you are wronged, you report to the police and your case will be addressed in a legal way.”

In another incident in Rumbek North County, Police spokesperson Makuac said a 20-year-old lactating mother took her own life under unclear circumstances in Malueth, leaving behind a baby of months.

He said law enforcement are investigating the incident to ascertain the trigger of the incident.

Daniel Laat Kon, Coordinator for Community Empowerment for Progress Organization, expressed concerns about the rise in suicide cases reported in different parts of the state.

“Looking at these cases of suicide particularly this year, we are worried as a CEPO and also as partners, if you compare the suicide cases of last year and compare it with happening which is very early and it is really bad.”

He said many of the suicide cases occurring in the state are connected to GBV and economic crisis of South Sudan.

He encourages people in difficult situations to talk to trusted persons or report to the police to seek help instead of taking their lives.

“We are urging everyone to stop such from happening because we don’t want people to commit suicide. Government needs to do something and partners also need to come in to create awareness raising and this is a right time to open counselling centers.”
