Lakes blames clan-based clashes on proliferation of guns in the hands of civilians

The caretaker Governor of Lakes says insecurity and widespread availability of light weapons are the main causes of more deaths in the state.

This month, over 60 people have been killed in the state in separate inter- communal clashes.

Matur Chut spoke to Eye Radio from Rumbek; he said many of the weapons came in during the insecurity from Jonglei State.

“When insecurity erupted in Bor, so many guns infiltrated into Lakes State –and these firearms include machine guns and others – they were sold to civilians,” he said.

Lakes State caretaker Governor said they are working to create awareness amongst the civilians, aiming at disarming what he calls “the hostile communities”.
