Kenya’s former Interior Cabinet Secretary, Prof. Kithure Kindiki, is set to be inaugurated as deputy president on Friday after a court lifted an order blocking the event following the impeachment of his predecessor.
The ceremony will be held at the Kenyatta International Convention Center in the morning, according to local media outlets.
The parliament impeached Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua in October on charges of gross violation of the constitution, undermining the president, and stocking ethnic hatred—accusations that he dismissed as politically motivated.
MPs who tabled the impeachment motion accuse Gachagua of promoting ethnically divisive politics, undermining the president, and having had a role in the anti-government uprising between June and July that saw Parliament overrun, among others.
After President Ruto nominated Kindiki, the country’s High Court halted the latter’s inauguration after Gachagua and his supporters filed over 30 court challenges to prevent his ousting and replacement.
In June, Kenya was hit by widespread protests as hundreds of youth took to the streets in major cities to voice opposition to a new finance bill proposing an increase in taxes, urging the parliament to reject it.
President Ruto later scrapped the finance bill, dissolved 47 state agencies, suspended non-essential travel for government workers and the purchase of new cars, and sacked his entire cabinet in response to the demands of protestors.
