Kiir reiterates commitment to Peace Agreement

President Salva Kiir says his government will fully implement the recently signed Compromise Peace Agreement.

He urged all government institutions to adhere to the conditions of the deal.

It was signed last month by President Salva Kiir, the leader of the SPLM in Opposition, Dr. Riek Machar and other stakeholders.

Addressing the press this afternoon, the president called upon the people of South Sudan to support in the implementation of the peace Agreement.

“I became confident that the issues have become clearer to my people and the political stakeholders. Then I signed the agreement, though with very serious reservations”

“I have fully committed myself and the government to the faithful implementation of the agreement on the resolution of the conflict in the republic of South Sudan,” he said, stating that all institutions of government shall be bound by this agreement and is expected to carry out the functions stipulated for them there in.

Last Thursday, the National Legislative Assembly approved the agreement, and unanimously adopted it.

“I believe you are all aware that the national; council of ministers has already endorsed and adapted the agreement and that the national legislature has already rectified this agreement.”

President Salva Kiir says IGAD is now expected to initiate the implementation of other provisions.

They include practical actions in the area of permanent ceasefire and transitional security arrangements and setting up the Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission.

A committee to incorporate the agreement into the Transitional Constitution has also to be formed.
