President Salva Kiir has ordered the new Minister of Finance, Kuol Daniel Ayuol, to stop the disappearance of public funds from banks and restore confidence in the financial system.
The President also instructed the minister to reform banking and payment systems to ensure the disbursement of public funds during a swearing-in ceremony of newly appointed officials, including the Minister of Finance, at the Presidential Palace in Juba.
Speaking on South Sudan Broadcasting Corporation (SSBC), President Kiir addressed reports of missing funds within the banking sector.
“I have learned many times that you closed the bank and you closed even the money,” President Kiir stated. “The money will come out, and tomorrow, when people come to check what they wanted to take, no money will be found. This must stop. I want you to return the money to its place.”
The ceremony included the induction of several officials into their roles. In addition to Kuol Daniel Ayuol, those taking the oath of office included Clement Juma, Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Mahjoub Biel Turuk, Deputy Minister of Public Service and Human Resources, and Santino Deng Wol, Chief of Defence Forces of the SSPDF
Benjamin Bak Deng administered the oath of office to the appointees.
