Kajo-keji residents worried about herders

Residents of Kajo-Keji County, Yei River State, have expressed concern over an influx of cattle in Kala Boma, Liwolo Payam.

They say the cattle keepers, who are allegedly from Jonglei, have been moving to the area since 2013.

A Member of Parliament representing Kajo-Keji in the former Central Equatoria State Legislative Assembly, Jacob Kweyansuk told Eye Radio that the cattle have destroyed farms.

He says cattle keepers are also causing insecurity in the area.

“They’re threatening the people in the area; their cattle are now moving anyhow,” Hon Kweyansuk said.

Over a year ago, President issued a decree ordering cattle keepers to return to their respective areas in an effort to reduce clashes between pastoralists and the farming host communities.

“But these people never obey [the order]. They did not really understand the order of the President. They are even taking our few animals from the people who have because they have guns,” he added.

Eye Radio’s attempts to reach pastoralists’ elders were unsuccessful.

Hon Kweyansuk urged the government to intervene to avoid conflict between the two groups.
