The governor of Jubek, Augustino Jadalla, has called for release of those in police custody for minor crimes.
This comes after the State security committee, headed by Governor, paid a field visit to all Police stations in Juba Town over the weekend.
Isaac Ribek, State Minister of Local Government, says they found most police cells congested, and some of inmates are being held without clear charges.
“We’ve received a lot of complaints that some people were being brought and detained on Friday and Saturday for making noise,” he told Eye Radio on Monday.
He said police cells are congested. The judges and justices have been on strike since May, in demand for removal of Chief Justice Chan Reec Madut, who they say has failed to resolve their demands for allowances and better working conditions.
They have vowed not to resume work until their demands are met. About 13 judges and and justices said to be ringleaders were sacked through a presidential decree in July.
“The prosecutors should immediately identify cases of those found with minor crimes and release them.”
According to the law, anyone arrested must be charged and tried in a court of law as soon as possible.
